What is being British all about? The monarchy and Magna Carta? Football and fish'n'chips? Can we really lay claim to a unique set of British values, such as tolerance, liberty and fair play?
Essentially British? is a free History and Citizenship resource consisting of a DVD compilation (sent to the Head of History at every UK secondary school) and online teaching guide. It uses a selection of rarely-seen films from the 1900s to the present day to investigate the slippery concept of 'Britishness'.
The selected titles are taken from the exciting BFI Mediatheque at BFI Southbank and encourage students to explore a variety of different issues such as citizenship, nationality, identity and diversity from a historical and contemporary perspective. Below, you'll also find a range of teaching ideas, key questions and lesson plans, illustrated by generous clips and complete films.
