All the films from this unit are displayed here: Glasgow Today and Tomorrow (1949), Who Cares? (1971), Cumbernauld: Town for Tomorrow (1967).

In this unit of work (Glasgow: a case study) a series of films about housing in and around Glasgow are used to underpin an analysis of redevelopment plans in Glasgow from 1945 onwards. Over the course of four lessons, students are introduced to conditions in Glasgow's 19th century tenement buildings, the redevelopment plans of Glasgow City Corporation in the 1950s, the various initiatives to re-house people in different areas of the city as well the development of new towns such as Cumbernauld and East Kilbride. While the films provide a significant insight into Glasgow's re-development and useful website links are included in every lesson, teachers will most likely need to find some further supporting materials relating to the city. In this lesson students consolidate their understanding of Glasgow's inner-city and new town re-developments and conduct research into Glasgow today. They are then asked to apply their knowledge to a GCSE style question.
|
Lesson Objective - To look at the inner-city and housing in Glasgow today and consider how the city has been redeveloped over time.
- To answer a GCSE question using Glasgow as the case-study

Trailer Instruct students to draw a timeline from the 1950s to the present day (in decades) and ask them to note down everything they have learned about housing conditions, re-development plans, new housing estates and new towns alongside the appropriate decade. You might wish to give them a series of key phrases or key words to organise (high rise estates, slum clearance, new towns planned etc.). The analysis and context provided on the films in the main Screenonline site might also provide further useful information (links on the right under Related Films and TV programmes).

Main Attraction What further questions would students like answered about urban re-development in Glasgow? Collect their ideas on the board, before asking small groups to conduct their own research into Glasgow today (the inner-city, housing estates and new towns). There is a list of useful links below and, in addition, you may have suitable textbook case-studies since Glasgow is an often cited example in GCSE texts. Students can also re-watch the films and extracts, linked to at the top of this page. Once students have completed their research, lead a whole class discussion, exploring what students have learned and identifying the key developments over time (which should be added to students' individual timelines).

End Credits Ask students to choose between the following two questions, using the work they have done on Glasgow to answer the question: - Urban planning schemes do not meet the needs of everyone. Choose an inner city redevelopment and describe the main features and problems of the scheme.
- There are different types of urban planning developments, such as inner city redevelopment, changing transport systems, city centre retail development and new towns. Choose one example of an urban planning development and describe its main features and the benefits or disadvantages of the scheme.
