These questions can be used to focus students' thinking while watching the film and/or to develop their understanding of film language.

STORY

  • Can you sum up the story of Dance Lexie Dance in a few sentences?
  • What is this film about?
  • Whose story is this? Is it Lexie's story or Laura's?

SEQUENCE

  • What do we learn about Lexie, Laura and their relationship from the opening sequence of the film?
  • What do we learn about Lexie, Laura and their relationship from the final sequence of the film?

CHARACTER

  • What is Lexie like at the beginning of the film? Has he changed by the end? In what ways, and why?
  • How would you describe Laura as a character?
  • Laura spends quite a lot of the film on her own. How do we learn about her character?

COLOUR

  • Do you notice any particular colours in the film?
  • How would you describe the colours in the factory where Lexie works? Are these colours any different to those in his home? How do these colours affect the mood of the film?

SOUND

  • Listen different types of sound in the film - music, sound effects, atmospheric sound (including silence) and dialogue.
  • How important is music in creating a mood in Dance Lexie Dance?

CAMERA

  • Can you find any examples of close-ups, medium shots, long-shots and pans in the film? Why are these used at these points in the story?

SETTING

  • How much of the film takes place indoors? How much takes place outdoors?
  • Are there things in the house that tell us about Lexie and Laura? What do we learn about Laura from her bedroom and the rest of the house?
  • How would you describe the factory where Lexie works?
  • How are Lexie's factory and Lexie and Laura's home connected? What are the major differences between these two settings?
