While researching a film about design for the British Railways Board in late 1962, director Geoffrey Jones travelled all over the British Isles shooting 16mm notes on anything and everything he found interesting and relevant. Struck by the images of black steam trains churning down the tracks against a glaring white backdrop, Jones hit upon the idea of making a new, separate film contrasting the comparative comfort of passengers with the cold, hard work that had to be done to keep the lines clear.
The result was Snow, an hypnotic short that won at least 14 major awards upon its release, as well an Oscar nomination in 1965.
