A New Year's Day procession incorporating 210 elephants.

Show full synopsis

This film, a companion-piece to Coronation Durbar at Delhi (also 1903) records the New Year's Day procession of elephants through the city streets, their passengers including such dignitaries as Lord Curzon (the British viceroy in India), Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught (representing the British Royal Family) and their consorts, together with members of the Indian ruling classes.

Apparently 210 elephants took part in the procession, and R.W. Paul claimed that "a large number" of them appeared in the final film.

Michael Brooke

*This film is included in the BFI DVD compilation 'R.W. Paul: The Collected Films 1895-1908', with music by Stephen Horne and optional commentary by Ian Christie.
