This new item's two title cards also provide a complete synopsis. "While Torquay basked in almost tropical sunshine suggesting the Riviera..." is followed by "...Londoners went tobogganing on Hampstead Heath", each illustrated with short sequences from each location. This is a typical example of Topical Budget "filler" capitalising on the perennial English obsession with the weather, and also the peculiar national pride that Britons take in highlighting its unpredictable nature. The Torquay sequences are beautifully shot, the combination of bright sunshine and palm trees adding up to a tourism promoter's dream. The term "the English Riviera" dates back to the Victorian era, when Torquay first became a popular holiday destination. As for tobogganing on Hampstead Heath, Topical would return there for the very similar Nothing Like This For Years (Topical Budget 745-1, 1925). Michael Brooke
