A transporter bridge is a novel way of traversing a navigable river, in this case the Usk, which has low-lying ground on either side. The vehicles and passengers travel in a 'gondola' or platform, suspended by cable from the suspension bridge. This bridge represented a saving in the journey time through this part of South Wales and it's opening was clearly a significant event for the town. The filmmakers have not yet been identified but it is a professional production with several long shots of the local dignitaries arriving for the opening and scenes demonstrating the operation of the bridge both from the banks and in phantom ride fashion. The bridge would feature again in a film over 50 years later in Tiger Bay (d. J. Lee Thompson, 1959) and is still in use today. Bryony Dixon
