Perhaps appropriately, what is most striking about this shot of the ancient Stonehenge monument on Salisbury Plain is its timelessness. Though human figures are present to give a sense of scale, the policeman's uniform has remained sufficiently unchanged to place the film at any point from the mid-19th to late 20th centuries, and dating it would be next to impossible without the relevant production company records and catalogues. Like many similar panoramic shots, it was designed to be screened at local fairs and music halls as a brief part of a longer programme. Michael Brooke
