A boy waits with his mother at Euston station. They are met by the boy's estranged father, who has brought an urn containing the ashes of the boy's grandfather. The mother quickly leaves and the father and son set off for Liverpool to spread the ashes at Anfield football ground.
Once at Liverpool, it emerges that the father hasn't prepared for the trip. They eventually get to Anfield only to realise it is closed to the public. Despondent at the wasted day, the father takes his son to the pub. Later they find themselves wandering aimlessly around the docks with the father unsuccessfully trying to think of an alternative plan for spreading the ashes. Desperate to go home, the boy impulsively throws the urn in the harbour. The father is shocked and starts shouting at his son for throwing the ashes away. But he quickly changes his mind and warms to his son's cheek and initiative. They make their way back home.
