The arrival of the French President, Armand Fallières, on a state visit. Show full synopsis
|
The 'entente cordiale', an informal alliance between Britain and France which
had been the result of King Edward's pro-French stance, proved popular with the
British public. The new leftist French President, Armand Fallières (the man who
had reinstated the notoriously dismissed officer Captain Alfred Dreyfus), was
cheered with great enthusiasm by the crowds when he arrived in London - in stark
contrast to criticism which the King received for his visit to the Russian Czar,
who was seen as excessively repressive. This newsreel item was one of several
taken of different public appearances by the President during his visit to
Britain and that year's Franco-British Exhibition.
