A survey of the activities of a year and the part played by the GPO in these activities.
Winter: The network of communications must be maintained all the year. Workmen repair telephone lines. Radio enables help to be sent to a ship in distress.
Spring: The weather improves. Communications are important for the farmer in the harvest season. Spring flowers are accompanied by a potato crop in the Channel Islands. A GPO radio mast is erected, and the first coaxial television cable is laid from London to Manchester.
Summer: Trooping the Colour. A Russian ballet rehearses at Covent Garden. Telephones enable the quick dissemination of sporting results to the public. Holidaymakers at Blackpool send postcards home, which are sorted by postal workers.
Autumn: A sheep market is held at Lanark. Shipping traffic in ports is controlled by telephone. Winter food supplies arrive at ports. Lloyd's and the Stock Exchange rely on speedy communications.
