Dickens' London (1924)

Synopsis

Warning: screenonline full synopses contain 'spoilers' which give away key plot points. Don't read on if you don't want to know the ending!

Real London locations which formed the settings for various Dickens' novels are shown, sometimes with characters from the novels and the author himself superimposed. Includes views of Dickens' houses in Marylebone and Doughty St., and a book shop displaying Dickens first editions. The remaining locations are all associated with scenes from the books - the Old Curiosity Shop off the Aldwych, the Adelphi arches (now Embankment), the site of the blacking factory at Hungerford Market (now under Hungerford Bridge), Bethnal Green and Jacob's Island from Oliver Twist (these include fragments of Hepworth's lost film version of Oliver Twist of 1911), Staple's Inn from Bleak House, Clifford's Inn from Pickwick and the George Inn. Various 'characters' from the novels are superimposed - Little Nell and Grandad, Fagin, the Artful Dodger and Dickens.
