The Duke and Duchess of York visit the Browning Settlement in Walworth.

Show full synopsis

The Duke and Duchess of York (the future King George VI and Queen Mother) visit the Browning Settlement in Walworth in the London Borough of Southwark. The Royal couple are welcomed by crowds of well-wishers in this brief item for the Topical Budget newsreel.

The Browning Settlement was established in 1895 and had been run by its founder, the Reverend Francis Herbert Stead. Stead was committed to working among the poor in the community and establishing a movement for social reform. He was a key figure in the fight to establish old age pensions in Britain.
