After May 1917, when Topical Budget was taken over by the War Office, and especially after November 1917 when the War Office Cinematograph Committee purchased the newsreel outright, royalty started to appear with far greater frequency in the newsreels. Cameramen were granted greater access to the royal family, and could get their cameras nearer than before, at the start of a process of turning the royals into weekly stars on British cinema screens.
