Mining Review's 1956 Science Special consisted of four previously released items dealing with scientific matters. They were: 'Communication Cord' (4th Year No.9, May 1951), about Thoresby Colliery inventor Gerald Russon's device for improving conveyor belt communication; 'Coal Gas' (3rd Year No.11, July 1950), about an experimental underground method of generating usable gas from coal without having to dig it out first; 'The Magnet' (4th Year No.7, March 1951), about a new magnetic safety catch for miners' lamps; 'Mass Consultation' (4th Year No.6, February 1951), about a mass X-ray unit at Mardy, South Wales.
