Many of the Evans brothers' films were structured in a similar way to the
early chase films of the 1900s. A scenario would be set up and the character
would encounter a series of characters with unfortunate consequences. The finale
was provided when all of these characters met up in a crowd and, finding common
cause, ganged up on the protagonist and exacted their revenge. This story
construction was typical of many contemporary entertainment forms, the pantomime
harlequinade and the comic book, and would suggest that the films were largely
aimed at a young audience.
