Both the Oxford and Cambridge University Hockey Clubs were founded in 1890, and the annual Varsity match between the universities marks the end of each season, a tradition that continues to the present day. The first match was played at Oxford, but since then it has been staged at a neutral venue - the one shown in this Topical Budget newsreel being Foxgrove Road, Beckenham, which hosted matches between 1909 and 1957. The teams are identifiable by their colours - both blue, Cambridge is lighter than Oxford. The 1913 match, the 24th, was won by Cambridge with a score of 7-2. This put Cambridge ahead in the overall scoresheet, with eleven matches to Oxford's ten (plus three draws). This match also marked the biggest margin of victory to date, a record that stood until 1975, when Oxford exacted a belated revenge by scoring 7-0. Michael Brooke
