Scottish poet Ivor Cutler tells a childhood tale of being caught playing with matches.

Show full synopsis

A tale of childhood transgression and discipline told by Scottish poet and musician Ivor Cutler is animated with a mixture of whimsy and grotesqueness that matches the story. Playing with matches, Ivor burns his new jacket, and at dinner cannot escape his mother's keen sense of smell. She sniffs out his sin and punishes him with a clout. Only his sister offers sympathy, and together they plan to run away with a whole box of matches each.

The sketchy simplicity of the drawings and Cutler's characteristically well-articulated narration suggest an everyday quality to mischief and punishment in a family setting that is cruel but not without warmth.
