Trained at London's Central School, Lynn Redgrave began her career in 1963 when she appeared in Tom Jones (d. Tony Richardson, 1963) followed by The Girl With Green Eyes (d. Desmond Davis, 1964). Her performance in the lead role in Georgy Girl (d. Silvio Narizzano, 1966) brought stardom, winning her the Golden Globe for Best Actress and the New York Film Critics Award. She appeared in a few more British films, including the underrated The National Health (d. Jack Gold, 1973), before going to live in America. In recent years she has appeared in a number of exceptional films including Shine (UK/Australia, d. Scott Hicks, 1996), as pianist David Helfgott's understanding wife, and Gods and Monsters (UK/US, d. Bill Condon, 1998), as Ian McKellen's devoted housekeeper, for which she received an Oscar nomination. She devised and toured with a one-woman show based around her father Michael Redgrave's career as actor and father, and was awarded an OBE in 2001.
