Onwurah, Ngozi (1964-)

Director, Writer

Main image of Onwurah, Ngozi (1964-)

A black film-maker who has directed a number of challenging short films, often foregrounding issues important to black women.

She is on record as wanting African cinema to break out of its "Art ghetto" and find an international audience, but her feature debut, Welcome II the Terrordome (1995), received only a muted response, despite acknowledgment of some powerful scenes.

Brian McFarlane, Encyclopedia of British Film
