Barbara Assoon was a notable stage and television actor in Britain during the 1950s and 1960s. One of her first acting roles was in Peter Ustinov's 1948 production of Indifferent Shepherd in her home town of Port of Spain, Trinidad. In 1949, she won a British Council scholarship to study drama in the UK, and chose the Bristol Old Vic as the host institution. She spent the next 19 years in England, acting in several TV and radio plays, and a number of stage plays. Assoon's first TV role was Tituba in Arthur Miller's The Crucible (ITV, tx. 3/11/1959), opposite a young Sean Connery as Proctor. Other roles followed: Eliza in television Play of the Week 'South' (24/11/1959), Dolly Green in the Drama '61 'The Big Pride' (ITV, tx. 28/5/1961) and a brief part in serial drama Outbreak of Murder (BBC, 1962). However, she found it hard to make any real headway as an actress on television and stage in Britain. She returned to Trinidad in 1968, where she is a well-known radio personality. Her last stage role was in 1990 in Derek Walcott's Remembrance, alongside the late Norman Beaton. Ann Ogidi
