Trevor Phillips was born in London in 1953 to Guyanese parents. He entered broadcasting in 1980, joining London Weekend Television. He started as a researcher on the regional current affairs series Skin and between 1982 and 1985 he was a producer on the documentary series Black on Black. He produced the black music and comedy showcase Club Mix (1986) before returning to his factual roots as a reporter on This Week (1986-7). At the end of 1986 he was producing the history series The Making of Britain, but it was his stint as presenter and itinerant reporter of The London Programme from 1987 to 1995 that made him a familiar face to the television viewing public.
Phillips set up a production company, Pepper Productions, that made high profile documentary series including Untold: Britain's Slave Trade (1999) and Windrush (1998), for which he co-wrote the book of the series.
He is a former Chairman of the London Arts Board; a Trustee of The Runnymede Trust, the race relations think-tank and in 2003 he was appointed Chair of the Commission For Racial Equality.
In 1999 he was awarded an OBE.
