Linda Mitchell was born in Cardiff and educated at Manchester University before gaining a Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism at the University of Wales Centre for Journalism Studies.
She began her broadcast career as a researcher with BBC Wales, later working as a freelance reporter and presenter for the BBC, most notably on the current affairs programme Black Britain (. In May 2000, she was appointed the BBC's Head of Diversity.
Between 1996 and 1999, she led the Community Affairs Unit for BBC South East, which was set up to improve the coverage of the African-Caribbean communities. While there she co-ordinated programming for local television and radio throughout England to mark the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the Empire Windrush, which brought the first wave of Caribbean settlers to this country.
As a freelance reporter/presenter and director of her own production company, she has reported on stories around the country and for both commercial and state broadcasters.
