Twice nominated for BAFTAs, for Live Now, Pay Later (d. Jay Lewis, 1962), as best newcomer to leading roles, and Get Carter (d. Mike Hodges, 1971) as hoodlum Eric Paice, toughly urban Ian Hendry was one of the most promising actors around in the '60s and '70s. Central School-trained, he had stage and TV experience, including a season with The Avengers (ITV, 1961) and the starring role in the series The Lotus Eaters (BBC, 1972-73), as well as an impressive list of film credits before his untimely death from undisclosed cause. He entered films in a tiny role in Room at the Top (d. Jack Clayton, 1958), and quickly established himself as a characterful leading man, in such films as Girl in the Headlines (d. Michael Truman, 1963) and The Beauty Jungle (d. Val Guest, 1964), and Roman Polanski starred him in Repulsion (1965), but he was declared bankrupt in 1980. He was married (1963-71) to actress Janet Munro. Brian McFarlane, Encyclopedia of British Film
