Co-founder with Lindsay Anderson and others of the short-lived but influential magazine, Sequence, Oxford-educated Houston joined the journal Sight and Sound in late 1950, as assistant to editor Gavin Lambert. She became its editor in 1956 and remained so until 1990, during which time it remained a civilised, perhaps somewhat staid, forum for discussion of international film. She was also the author of several books on film, including The Contemporary Cinema (1963) and Keepers of the Frame (1994). Brian McFarlane, Encyclopedia of British Film
