 Jimi Mistry was born in Scarborough in 1973. Primarily a stage actor, he first came to national attention on television in 1998 in the Silent Witness story 'Fallen Idol' (BBC, 2-9/4/1998), which was followed by a brief EastEnders role as Dr Fonseca (BBC, 1999-2000). He also guest starred in The Bill ('Home Movie', ITV, tx. 7/4/1998) and City Central ('Night on the Town', BBC, tx. 23/5/1998).
Mistry's film career was launched with the part of the rebellious son Tariq in East is East (d. Damien O'Donnell, 1999), reprising a role that he created for the original Royal Court stage production in 1996. He had previously appeared on the big screen in a minor role in Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet (US/UK, 1996).
After East is East he went on to feature in a number of British productions: Born Romantic (d. David Kane, 2000), My Kingdom (d. Don Boyd, 2001) and The Mystic Masseur (UK/India, d. Ismail Merchant, 2001). The Guru (US/Germany/France/UK, d. Daisy von Scherler Mayer, 2002) saw Mistry starring in a highly successful comedy as a young man who masquerades as a mystic sex guru in New York high society. Tejinder Jouhal
