Simon Beaufoy (born in Worth Valley, 1967) came to prominence as the writer of the hugely successful comedy of working-class life, The Full Monty (UK/US, d. Peter Cattaneo, 1997), showing an acute ear for nuances of pain, scabrous humour and poignancy. He worked a similar vein to less effect in the unlikely romance Among Giants (d. Sam Miller, 1998), written before Monty, but is a talent to be watched when his feeling for people and place is fully engaged. He is the co-founder of Footprint Films, 1994, which has produced much TV. Brian McFarlane, Encyclopedia of British Film
