Lawton, Frank (1904-1969)

Actor

Main image of Lawton, Frank (1904-1969)

A dapper leading man of '30s films, in UK, from Young Woodley (d. Thomas Bentley, 1930, repeating his stage success), and the US, notably in Cavalcade (US, d. Frank Lloyd, 1933) and as the adult David Copperfield (US, d. George Cukor, 1935). After war service (1939-45), he played character roles in such British films as The Winslow Boy (d. Anthony Asquith, 1948), as Kate's spineless suitor, and A Night to Remember (d. Roy Ward Baker, 1958), as the White Star Line's Managing Director.

On stage from 1923, he had his main career there, but also ran up an interesting film role-call, usually of upper-middle-class types. He was married to Evelyn Laye from 1934.
