Cast: Peter Vaughan (Gardiner, Bishop of Winchester), John Stride (King Henry VIII), Oliver Cotton (Earl of Surrey), Jack May (Lord Chancellor), Ronald Pickup (Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury) Summary: A scene often cut from productions that stress the play's pageantry, it is nonetheless of crucial importance in establishing Henry VIII's relationship with the church following his divorce from Katharine. Here, the King angrily contradicts Bishop Gardiner's condemnation of Cranmer, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and then makes it clear that he favours the latter by asking him to perform the baptism of his new child, the future Queen Elizabeth I.
