Synopsis

The city in the early morning: deserted streets, derelict furniture. A cat stalks pigeons; street signs. Slogans painted on the wall. A motorcycle starts up and drives away. A vagrant enters an empty building. A family living in one room, getting up in the morning, having breakfast. A school playground; children playing in the streets. A woman scrubs her doorstep. School playground. Unemployed men.

Water drips onto a bucket. Dilapidated houses, cats. Men work on the roads, cleaning windows; women work in a commercial laundry. Unemployed men in the public library. Boys in the street. Armistice Day ceremony on the radio brings back memories of the war. A rag and bone man blows his bugle as he rides along on his cart. A woman tells how the vet cremated her budgerigar. Shoppers at a grocery store. Young people now have more money to spend - they are seen on street corners and in cafes. Small children in the street. Two men on a park bench. Girls singing in the school playground.
