'Edinburgh', originally transmitted on Channel 5 (now Five) on 26 September
2000
Presenter Alistair Appleton introduces us to Edinburgh and its housing market
before turning to today's property. We are introduced to Geoff and Lorna
Nicholsby and shown round their large detached house. They talk to Alistair
about their reasons to move.
Ann Maurice is given a room-by-room tour by Geoff and Lorna. She is
humorously critical of the dated 1970s look, the choice of bold colours and
patterns, Balinese wooden masks, use of carpets on the bedroom wall and bed
frame and more. The three sit down with Alistair to discuss her omments. To
convince Geoff and Lorna of the need for a makeover, Alistair introduces clips
of prospective buyers viewing the property, all of them negative. Lorna and
Geoff become defensive, and Ann struggles to convince them of her makeover
philosophy. The redecoration gets underway, with carpets torn off
walls and wooden ceilings painted white, while Alistair tries out the indoor
pool. Alistair explains the work being done to a short montage of the
redecoration, including painting over the pink interiors and exterior with a
cream colour. Ann Maurice goes with Geoff to his shop, which sells
kilts and other Scottish items, to find some tartan material to use for
finishing touches in the house. She is persuaded to buy a black leather
mini-kilt.
With the work finished, Ann and Alistair, dressed in kilts, engage in
flirtatious banter before Ann shows Alistair round the house, explaining what
has been done. A breakdown of the costs involved is given.
Alistair talks to the owners about the changes but they are still
unconvinced. Ann is vindicated when the prospective buyers return with very
positive comments. Afterwards, Geoff, Lorna, Alistair and Ann and the production
team have a celebratory drink in the kitchen.
In a short voiceover, Alistair provides an update on the sale of the property since
the makeover, before going on to trail next week's show and doing a plug for the
House Doctor book.
