A man discusses renting a room from a young widow. He agrees to take the room, but insists that he will have to re-arrange the furniture. She is reluctant to let him change anything, as this was the room of her dead husband George.
The man finds it curious that a married couple should have separate rooms. She explains that when she and George were first married, they had a loving relationship, but as time went by he became distant. George didn't have the time or energy to waste on 'silliness' and moved into his own room.
She goes on to explain that she and George had an arrangement whereby she would knock on the door once a week and, when George invited her in, she would sign for and collect her housekeeping money. As a result she grew to dislike George's Room. The man is shocked by this and invites her to come into the room with him to see that there is nothing to be afraid of. She smiles at him.
