Maureen has attempted and failed her driving test six times, but is
determined to try again. Danny is a teenager in love who cannot wait to get a
driving licence, so he will be able to see his girlfriend who lives miles away.
Joan sits in the back seat of her husband's car, trying to learn by watching
him.
Maureen and her husband David leave their house in Bristol for one more
driving lesson. David confesses he is desperate for her to pass the test.
Meanwhile, Joan gives her reasons for wanting to drive: she dreams of trips out
with her nine grandchildren.
Maureen is driving on a busy highway. David is visibly terrified, and the two
start arguing after she nearly crashes the car. David works nights at a Bus
station. Maureen works at a Police Station as a cleaner. She explains that if
she passes her driving test, she will set up her own business. During a driving
lesson, Maureen and her instructor, Linda, go through Maureen's weaknesses.
Maureen can afford only one lesson per week.
Joan is about to start her last lesson before the test. In his living room,
her instructor, Paul, shows off his 400-strong collection of toy cars. He
worries about money and confesses he is thinking of moving on. Pam, a former
colleague, has been managing her own driving school and has invited Paul to join
her.
Danny is dreaming of his independence. While his father rehearses organ
recitals downstairs, he shows a picture of Gillian, the girl he is planning to
visit as soon as he gets his driving licence.
Maureen wakes up at two o'clock in the morning and makes David revise with
her for the theory test she's taking in a few hours. Halfway through the test,
Maureen is the only entrant in the room; everyone else has already finished.
Danny's drive for freedom begins; it's his first lesson with Pam. Maureen
waits anxiously for the test results. Learning of yet another failure, she
considers giving up. In the meantime, Joan passes her practical test. Pam rings
Paul; they are about to begin their partnership.
