For many refugees, escaping a country where they might be suffering from abuse, imprisonment or the horrors of war represents a last hope for a decent life. Their first impressions of a new place might be very disorientating. What's more, many refugees and asylum seekers may not be able to understand the language, customs and laws of their new home.
Those who've been forced to leave against their will may find the experience even more traumatic. They may have had to leave behind family and friends, while for illegal immigrants (people who are not authorised to enter Britain) the situation can be even worse. They have very few rights and are under the constant threat of imprisonment and deportation if they are discovered. Both groups are therefore likely to feel lost, alone and alienated.
