Travel Cunard Line - Canadian Route (1923)

Synopsis

Warning: screenonline full synopses contain 'spoilers' which give away key plot points. Don't read on if you don't want to know the ending!

Street scenes of Liverpool and exteriors of Cunard's head office overlooking the Mersey. Passengers proceed to the landing stage prior to boarding one of the brand new super-liners now servicing the Canadian route. Horse drawn mail vans and large dray wagons piled with luggage stand by to be loaded. Crowds of people wait at the foot of the gangways to see off friends and relatives. A ship shown at sea is the very large liner RMS Carmania, which is also seen from dock.

A special train service takes passengers from Waterloo to Southampton. Relatives and friends say goodbye. The 'Cunard Special' sign appears on the side of the carriage. Passengers ascend the gangway to the SS Andania, one of the new Cunarders. Two small children have their picture taken, framed by a lifebuoy marked with the name of the ship. The kitchens and serving areas of the SS Ausonia are shown, as is the third class dining room. An intertitle draws attention to the 'Appointments and Stewards service'. The room is relatively pleasant, well-lit with long tables and potted palms. There are many families with small children. The third-class breakfast menu is shown for Sunday 21st October 1923: compote of fruit, kippered herrings, bacon and egg, porridge, hot rolls preserves and tea and coffee. On deck, a 'light repaste' is served at 11am. The Cabin class (second-class) dining room is more lavish than third, with individual tables and more expensive place settings.

On-board games and entertainments are shown, including deck tennis, shuffleboard, a children's tea party and a dance accompanied by an orchestra, which, a title assures, is carried on board all three of the super-liners Antonia, Andania and the Ausonia. Passengers change money at the Purser's Office and sit by the fireside in one of the lounges before the ship picks up the pilot at Father Point to be taken into harbour at Quebec City. The pilot and quarantine doctor smile for the camera. The ship pulls in, and the passengers disembark. The stewards help carry the smaller children down the gang plank and the passengers board the Cunard Special. SS Andania departs from Quebec City under the bridge. The captain and crew pose as for a photograph. The ship arrives at Montreal.Street scenes of Liverpool and exteriors of Cunard's head office overlooking the Mersey.
