The Promised Land?

Introduction

Slums, social housing and suburban expansion - just some of the issues explored in this diverse collection of films from the BFI National Archive.

The Promised Land? is a free resource to support teachers in introducing and exploring some of the major issues associated with housing since the 1920s. The selected titles, taken together, offer an historical perspective on what has remained a major social and political issue across the 20th and 21st centuries.

The resource is aimed primarily at Geography and Citizenship teachers at a secondary level, however, the films will also be of interest to teachers of History, English and Media Studies.

Follow the links below to access the films and extracts in full as well as a range of teaching ideas, key questions, lesson plans and downloadable resources linked to the curriculum at key stages 3 and 4.

For general support for using moving images in the classroom, download the Moving Images in the Classroom guide on the BFI website.
